Under glorious skies in the centre of the French capital, a press conference was held at the Automobile Club de France officially launching the new-for-2010 FIA GT1 World Championship.

Ahead of what is expected to be an extremely competitive inaugural season, the event drew nearly 300 people, including the media, manufacturer representatives, sponsors, teams and drivers. Emceed by ex-racer Tiff Needell, the event’s first speaker was FIA President Jean Todt, followed by series’ founder and CEO of the SRO Motorsports Group Stephane Ratel.

Among the six manufacturer representatives who then spoke, NISMO President and NISSAN Motor’s Global Motorsports Program Director Yuichi Sanada commented, “We are very excited about NISSAN returning to a world championship after nearly 20 years away. The FIA GT1 World Championship is an ideal venue for NISSAN to showcase its technology globally through the participation of its iconic model the NISSAN GT-R. Our partner teams, Sumo Power GT and Swiss Racing Team are also excited about racing the NISSAN GT-R at circuits around the world. We are looking forward to the inaugural race in Abu Dhabi in April.”

The Press Conference was followed by the unveiling of the 2010 cars on the Place Vendome, located in the heart of the city, and which drew a great deal of attention from onlookers and passersby. Machines from each of the twelve competing teams were uncovered one by one, including the #23 Sumo Power GT-entered NISSAN GT-R and the similar #3 entry from Swiss Racing Team, both cars displaying their final livery for the first time.

Drivers Peter Dumbreck (Scotland) and Michael Krumm (Germany) from the #23 Sumo Power GT entry were on hand for photographs and to field questions, while multiple FIA GT race-winner Karl Wendlinger, who will drive one of the Swiss Racing Team-entered NISSAN GT-Rs spoke as a representative of the GT1 drivers. “I have been racing in the FIA GT Championship for many years, but now I’m very excited about the new world championship – and very happy to be driving the NISSAN GT-R.”

Both teams have taken part in pre-season testing: Sumo Power GT attending the FIA official test at France’s Paul Ricard and also conducting a private test in Spain while Swiss Racing Team have been to two FIA official tests, at the Algarve Circuit and at Paul Ricard.

Drivers for the #22 Sumo Power GT and #4 Swiss Racing Team entries will be announced shortly.

Within the next 10 days, the 4 competing NISSAN GT-Rs will be shipped to Abu Dhabi for the season-opener, taking place at the Yas Marina circuit on April 17th. The inaugural FIA GT1 World Championship then visits another nine countries.

i-flow’s dynamic, elegant lines not only portray a futuristic silhouette, but also contribute to exceptional aerodynamics. Hyundai’s first diesel-electric hybrid powertrain integrates a new ‘U2’ 1.7-litre two-stage turbocharged engine and the company’s Lithium Ion-Polymer battery technology provides an efficient and advanced combination, enhanced by a six-speed, dual-clutch transmission. By 2012, Hyundai plans to begin series manufacture of FCEVs for delivery to fleet customers in South Korea.

Hyundai’s market share of 8.8% represents the best ever monthly market share result and the second best monthly sales result since the factory established the wholly owned subsidiary Hyundai Motor Company Australia in 2003.

In a total market that has increased +17% (February YTD 2010 v. February YTD 2009), Hyundai Motor Company Australia has achieved an overall increase in sales of +73.6%.

iLoad posted its best ever sales result of 657 units and best ever market share of 33.7%, ranking first in the van segment for the first time.

“The team at Hyundai and the Hyundai Dealer network are excited that more Australians are considering Hyundai when they are looking for a new car,” said Damien Meredith, Hyundai’s Director of Sales. “The all-new ix35 compact SUV was launched last month and we have the i20 compact hatch and i45 mid-sized sedan launching before the middle of the year.”

• Sales from overseas plants rose 43.9% percent to 133,797 units, led by China and India.

Motor sport is one of the few sporting activities in which men and women compete alongside each other on an equal footing, yet as they make up only 8% of registered licence holders, women are hugely under-represented among motor sport drivers.

There are, nonetheless, an estimated 50,000 women actively involved in British motor sport, organising events, running clubs and associations, timekeeping, marshalling and fulfilling a host of other support roles without which the sport itself could not continue.

To celebrate their importance to motor sport, more than 50 female competitors, marshals, officials and volunteers gathered at Silverstone, home of British motor sport and the 2010 Santander Formula 1 British Grand Prix, to support the Motor Sports Association’s Women in Motorsport Group.

Among the attendees was Go Motorsport ambassador and ITV’s British Touring Car Championship presenter Louise Goodman. Also present was reigning Ginetta Junior Champion and 2009 BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year nominee Sarah Moore, the first female driver ever to win a major British motor racing championship.

Goodman said: “It was a fabulous experience to come together with all these other women involved in the sport to show that motor sport is not just for the men. I really hope that this inspires more girls to consider the sport; one of them might just turn out to be the new Jenson Button!”

Sue Sanders, Chairman of the MSA Women in Motorsport Group, said: “This has been a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate the diverse range of roles that women undertake within the sport at all levels. We believe that motor sport is truly fair and equal but there is plenty of room for more women. We hope that this gathering will celebrate those already involved and stimulate others that may be interested in getting started.”

MSA Chief Executive Colin Hilton said: “Motor sport still tends to be seen as a male-dominated activity, so we need to create female role models to inspire the next generation. We are seeing a substantial increase in female participation among the junior ranks, especially with the Let’s Go Karting initiative that gives young people a first experience of karting for just £5. Similarly, the Go Motorsport message that we are taking to schools across the county is aimed equally at girls and boys.”

The website highlights the many different types of motor sport available and demonstrates that there are some extremely cost-effective options that do not require a lot of money.

The Go Motorsport campaign is bolstered by ten Regional Development Officers (RDOs) who deliver the Go Motorsport message to schools and colleges across the country and also working with clubs, associations and venues to promote motor sport in their areas.

Goodman, ITV’s Formula 1 pitlane reporter from 1996 to 2008 and current presenter of the channel’s Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship coverage, will join a host of female competitors, marshals, officials and volunteers at the home of British motor racing on International Women’s Day to celebrate the important role played by women in motor sport.

Prior to her broadcasting career, Goodman worked in PR and managed media relations for Formula 1 drivers such as Mika Hakkinen, Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Martin Brundle, Eddie Irvine and Rubens Barrichello. She also worked as Press Officer for the Leyton House Formula 1 team for three years and was Head of Communications at Jordan Grand Prix for five. At the 2006 British Grand Prix, Goodman became the first woman ever to take part in a Formula 1 pitstop.

Goodman said: “I am delighted to have been invited to Silverstone to celebrate the achievements of women in motor sport. Of course, it would be great to see far more women behind the wheel but we must also recognise the huge numbers that are involved in the sport in other ways.”

“This is a very strong result and provides further evidence of renewed growth in vehicle sales,” FCAI Chief Executive Andrew McKellar said.

Private buyers returned to the market in greater numbers during February, recording a 9.3 per cent increase on the same month last year.

“It is encouraging to see private buyers edging back into the market following the financial concerns of the past year,” he said.

Business sales remained strong (22.7 per cent increase) and there was a sharp rise in the number of vehicles sold to rental companies (175 per cent increase).

“Deliveries of vehicles purchased under the business tax break are gradually phasing down and we need to examine how the market will look without the impact of economic stimulus,” Mr McKellar said.

“Looking ahead, sustaining the confidence of private buyers is the key challenge for the economy,” he said.

“For that reason we continue to be cautious about the impact of interest rate increases,” Mr McKellar said.

Toyota retained the top selling position in February, increasing its market share to 20.5 per cent; followed by Holden with 13.6 per cent and for the first time in third position, Hyundai with 8.8 per cent.
